You are about to embark on a trip to reality where employer response is immediate and your chances for getting the job multiplied tenfold. How many times have you written a cover letter, sent it off accompanied by a crisp new copy of your résumé only to play the waiting game, and in some cases, no-one really answers your application and so you remain in limbo. Well, it is time to come out of the cave and face the elements.
Looking for a job can be daunting and frustrating. Expectations are high and emotions run deep when and quite often discouragement looms just around the corner like a thick fog ready to envelope your desire, and your perception of the future. A cloud of depression hangs above and it takes a lot of energy just to stay positive. Yet there is a way to stay a couple of steps ahead and start winning and improving the odds.
Job searching is a process, not a problem. It is no different to planting and maintaining a garden. It is really up to you and how committed you truly are to getting the job you have always dreamed about. OK, so now I have your attention, let's look at formula for achieving what you deserve!
First of all, make yourself a list of prospective employers you wish to contact. Look up the yellow pages on line and print off at least three to four hundred different companies within the area or radius you wish to work in. Making the list gives you a sense of security knowing that you have many to approach.
Secondly, and most importantly, use the phone to make your initial approach. The telephone produces the most immediate and direct result imaginable. It is better than email, snail mail or other. Plus, at the same time by talking to employers over the phone you get to learn more vital information about your industry or chosen field in your area. Phoning is to you as panning and sifting was to the gold diggers of the nineteenth century. Commit your self to calling at least twenty employers a day. These are calls to people who have the power to hire staff, otherwise you cannot count it as a call. Call one hundred prospective employers per week and see what happens in the second week. Try it just for two weeks. Play the numbers game and employ the Law of Averages to work on your side. The secret is to be consistent each day, everyday for the next two weeks. Keep the flow and watch it go!
Statistically you cannot fail! In the second week you should have at least seven interviews booked. What? The world is coming to an end, the banks are in trouble and people are losing their jobs? Of course, all these things will always happen and the people who put their shoulder to their wheel and push hard enough always get what they want. This system has been tried and tested and actually works. No pain, no gain…No fear.
Here is what to say when calling a prospective employer, “Good morning, It's Sal calling and I was just wondering if you could help me. Do you have any job vacancies, are you looking for a helping hand? That is it! You don't need to say anything else. Most people wish to be of help so this dialog sets the correct mood. Once you get the hang of it you can modify it to suit your personality and you will then feel even more secure about using it. In the end, it is nothing more than a numbers game. No different than if you stood at the subway entrance selling lottery tickets. Most will say NO, some will say YES. You have a 50/50 chance at this. What have you got to lose? The sooner you play the game and get into the swing of it, the closer you will be to becoming gainfully employed in a job that you desired. Do you dare to move forward with confidence?
